ASK DR. DAVID
Dear Dr. David:
My dog is having accidents in the bed while she is sleeping. She is a well-trained dog throughout the day. What do you think may
be the cause of this behavior? Is this anything about which I should be concerned?
Dear Sara:
Sara
The condition that you are describing is called "urinary incontinence," or the loss of bladder control. There are many causes for this condition, some include nerve damage, hormone deficiencies, bladder structural deformities, urinary tract infections, bladder stones, excessive drinking, or in males, an enlarged prostate gland.
One of the most common types of urinary incontinence occurs in older spayed female dogs and is caused by a deficiency of the hormone estrogen. Signs include urine leakage during sleep
or while walking or jumping. Generally speaking, these dogs do not realize that they are urinating. Estrogen supplementation is usually successful in treating these females, but they will need this treatment for the rest of their life.
Due to the fact that there are so many causes of urinary incontinence, you need to take your dog to your veterinarian. A complete physical, lab tests and x-rays are generally indicated to diagnose the cause of this problem.
Please make note that it is not recommended to restrict your dog's water intake without your veterinarian's consent to do so. And watch for other signs worth reporting to your vet, such as the presence of blood in the urine, unusual thirst or any changes in eating habits.
